A teenage boy was discovered deceased only a few days after being falsely accused of taking the cremated remains of a dead baby during a break-in, an inquest has learned.

Heartbreaking Discovery

The young boy's mother and father discovered his body in his bedroom at his Connah's Quay residence on 19 November 2021.

False Allegations Start

The inquest learned how his parent received a communication on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a individual inquiring if Kai was her offspring. The communication stated: "Tell him thanks for burgling my apartment."

In a statement read to the court, the mother said the individual had been in the media, asserting her infant's remains had been taken in a burglary - a claim which was false.

Law Enforcement Inquiry

An investigation report from authorities later determined the supposed break-in complainant had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that the items was never taken in the first place".

News coverage about the supposed stolen ashes attracted social media responses, and although the teenager was not identified in the messages, his parent said people "knew it was him".

The "online posts were extremely upsetting", she said.

Emotional Health Impact

She explained that her son had been identified with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that disorder, other peoples' views really were important to him.

"It would have affected him severely," she commented, "especially when this was untrue".

The teenager was arrested at home, but nothing was found. He was taken to a law enforcement facility and later released pending further inquiry.

Authorities said they would be in touch, the inquest heard, but had failed to reached out to the relatives by the time of his death.

Withdrawal and Worry

His mother said her son "became isolated" after the detention and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like days".

When she talked to him about the supposed burglary, she said her son told her he had entered the house because the woman who resided there had said he could use the bathroom whenever he wanted, but refuted removing anything.

Digital Bullying

In a combined testimony between her and her husband, the mother said her son was being bullied online after the accusations.

The inquest learned that one 19-year-old encouraged Kai to end his life.

She had no worries on the night before he died, describing how she had heard him "chuckling and joking".

She described him as a "compassionate, loving" boy, and said her "family is totally devastated".

He had been "obviously concealing his worries", she said, adding that he could not bear to have anyone "think bad of him".

School Reaction

The hearing heard from educational staff at the local secondary school.

On November 8th, she "overheard some students discussing that Kai had been detained and that was the initial I heard".

"He told me... he'd done nothing wrong," she continued.

After the discussion, the educator said she rang the family's family telephone and left a message saying she had communicated to the student about the allegations.

The proceedings heard his parents said they did not receive that message.

Official Conclusion

Lead coroner told the inquest he would await documents regarding what improvements had been made to handling suspects with ADHD, before deciding whether he should make a prevention of subsequent deaths report.

Providing a descriptive conclusion, he stated: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsubstantiated accusations were made against the teenager, a young individual.

"Probably falsehoods were subsequently embellished and exaggerated through the platform of online networks.

"On 11 November, he was interviewed by the authorities and after his interview he was released whilst investigations continued."

The coroner determined: "There is no evidence that the actions or failures of any organization caused or contributed to his passing and although it was the outcome of a personal action it is not possible to determine his intent."
